For years, two cannabinoids dominated almost every conversation about cannabis: THC and CBD.

That is beginning to change.

As consumers, researchers and hemp businesses learn more about the chemical complexity of the cannabis plant, increasing attention is being paid to cannabinoids that occur in much smaller quantities.

Two of the most frequently discussed are CBG, or cannabigerol, and CBN, or cannabinol.

They are often described as “minor cannabinoids”, but that description refers mainly to the relatively small quantities in which they are typically found — not necessarily their importance.

Cannabis can produce well over 100 different phytocannabinoids, and scientific understanding of many of them is still at a relatively early stage.

For the CBD industry, this expanding interest is changing the way consumers look at hemp products, laboratory reports and cannabinoid profiles.

What Are Minor Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds associated with the Cannabis sativa plant.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is now familiar to millions of consumers, while THC is primarily known for its intoxicating effects.

However, these represent only part of the plant's cannabinoid chemistry.

Other naturally occurring cannabinoids include:

  • CBG — cannabigerol;

  • CBN — cannabinol;

  • CBC — cannabichromene;

  • THCV — tetrahydrocannabivarin;

  • CBDV — cannabidivarin;

  • and numerous less frequently discussed compounds.

Many are present in substantially smaller concentrations than CBD or THC, which is why the term “minor cannabinoid” is commonly used.

Scientific research into these compounds is continuing, but the evidence base varies considerably from one cannabinoid to another.

That distinction is important.

Growing commercial interest should not be confused with established medical evidence.

What Is CBG?

CBG stands for cannabigerol.

Its acidic precursor, CBGA, occupies an interesting position in the chemistry of the cannabis plant.

During plant development, CBGA can act as a precursor from which several other cannabinoid acids are formed through different biochemical pathways.

Those compounds can ultimately give rise to familiar cannabinoids including CBD and THC.

Because much of the precursor material is converted during the plant's development, mature cannabis plants may contain relatively modest quantities of CBG compared with their dominant cannabinoids.

Plant genetics and cultivation practices can influence these concentrations.

As interest in CBG has increased, breeders have also worked with genetics selected for different cannabinoid profiles.

Why Is CBG Receiving More Attention?

CBD demonstrated that consumers were interested in cannabis products that were not centred exclusively on THC.

That opened the door to wider interest in the plant's chemistry.

CBG has consequently become increasingly visible in cannabinoid research and product development.

It now appears on the cannabinoid panels of many detailed laboratory reports, giving consumers an opportunity to see how much is naturally present in different hemp varieties.

Researchers have also investigated how CBG interacts with biological systems.

However, much of the research surrounding minor cannabinoids remains preclinical or preliminary.

Consumers should therefore be cautious of businesses presenting early-stage scientific findings as established therapeutic facts.

A cannabinoid can be scientifically interesting without being a proven treatment for a particular condition.

What Is CBN?

CBN stands for cannabinol.

Its chemistry differs from that of CBG.

CBN is particularly interesting because it can form as THC changes through processes including oxidation over time.

Exposure to factors such as air, heat and light can contribute to changes in cannabinoid composition.

As cannabis material ages, this can result in increasing levels of CBN under some circumstances.

CBN was actually one of the earliest cannabinoids isolated and studied by scientists, despite receiving far less mainstream consumer attention than CBD or THC in recent decades.

Today, renewed interest in minor cannabinoids has brought CBN back into the conversation.

Does CBN Automatically Mean “Sleep”?

CBN is frequently marketed in connection with nighttime products and sleep.

Consumers should be careful with claims of this kind.

Interest in the compound is genuine, and researchers continue to investigate its pharmacology, but the clinical evidence surrounding many widely repeated CBN claims remains limited.

Marketing can move considerably faster than science.

That does not mean CBN is uninteresting.

It means consumers should distinguish between emerging research and claims that have been established through substantial clinical evidence.

The same principle applies to many minor cannabinoids.

CBD, CBG and CBN Are Different Compounds

It can be tempting to think of all non-THC cannabinoids as slightly different versions of CBD.

That is not accurate.

CBD, CBG and CBN are chemically distinct compounds.

They can interact differently with biological targets and arise through different processes within or after the cannabis plant develops.

Their concentrations also vary between varieties and products.

This is one reason detailed cannabinoid testing can be valuable.

Instead of simply showing a headline CBD percentage, a comprehensive cannabinoid analysis can provide a broader picture of what is actually present in a sample.

Why Laboratory Testing Is Becoming More Important

As the cannabinoid market becomes more complicated, laboratory testing becomes more important rather than less.

A product described simply as “CBD flower” may contain a range of naturally occurring cannabinoids in addition to CBD.

Different genetics can produce different cannabinoid profiles.

For consumers exploring a CBD flower range, understanding the laboratory analysis can therefore provide more useful information than focusing only on the number printed most prominently on the packaging.

A useful cannabinoid report might include measurements for compounds such as:

  • CBD;

  • CBDA;

  • CBG;

  • CBGA;

  • THC;

  • THCA;

  • CBC;

  • and CBN.

The exact panel varies between laboratories.

Testing also needs context.

Consumers should check whether a certificate relates to the product or batch currently being sold and when the sample was analysed.

A Bigger Percentage Does Not Automatically Mean a Better Product

The growing interest in minor cannabinoids presents a potential challenge for the CBD industry.

Once consumers become interested in a compound, companies naturally begin competing over percentages.

That can encourage the assumption that more must always be better.

Cannabis products are more complicated than that.

A cannabinoid percentage is a measurement, not a universal quality score.

Genetics, cultivation, terpene profile, freshness, post-harvest handling and overall product transparency may all be relevant when comparing hemp products.

Minor cannabinoids should therefore add to the information available to consumers rather than becoming another isolated marketing number.

Hemp Genetics Are Becoming More Diverse

Modern cannabis breeding makes it possible to select plants for particular characteristics over multiple generations.

Historically, much of the cannabis market focused on THC.

The growth of the hemp and CBD industries increased interest in varieties capable of producing different cannabinoid profiles.

That has encouraged further attention on genetics containing notable concentrations of compounds such as CBG.

For growers and breeders, cannabinoid composition can therefore become one of several characteristics considered alongside yield, plant structure, aroma and cultivation performance.

For consumers, the result is an increasingly diverse marketplace.

Terpenes Still Matter

The growing focus on cannabinoids should not make consumers forget about the other compounds found in cannabis.

Terpenes contribute significantly to the aroma of different varieties.

Compounds such as myrcene, limonene, pinene and beta-caryophyllene can contribute to noticeably different aromatic profiles.

Two hemp flowers with similar CBD concentrations can therefore smell completely different.

Similarly, two products with measurable CBG may still have very different overall characteristics.

Cannabinoid percentages provide useful information, but they are only one part of the plant's chemical profile.

Why Transparency Matters More as the Market Expands

When most consumers were simply looking for CBD oil, product comparisons could appear relatively straightforward.

The modern market is increasingly complex.

Consumers now encounter different cannabinoid ratios, extracts, flowers, concentrates and products containing compounds they may never previously have heard of.

That makes responsible product information increasingly important.

Retailers should clearly explain what a product contains and avoid presenting emerging scientific research as proven medical fact.

Laboratory analysis should support product descriptions where appropriate.

Consumers should also be wary of products making dramatic claims without meaningful evidence to support them.

Minor Cannabinoids Are Likely to Remain Part of the Conversation

CBD is unlikely to disappear from the centre of the hemp industry anytime soon.

It remains the cannabinoid most closely associated with the mainstream CBD market.

But the industry's understanding of cannabis is becoming more detailed.

CBG and CBN demonstrate why.

Both compounds have distinct chemistry and growing research interest, yet neither should simply be treated as “the next CBD”.

There is still much to learn.

For consumers, the most useful development may not be the arrival of another fashionable cannabinoid at all.

It may instead be a shift towards looking at cannabis products more intelligently: examining full cannabinoid profiles, asking for meaningful laboratory information, understanding the limitations of current research and recognising that the plant contains considerably more than one or two well-known compounds.

As scientific research continues, our understanding of minor cannabinoids will evolve with it.

For now, transparency and evidence remain considerably more valuable than hype.
